  • What was done well in this presentation?

The presentation was well made and seemed very thought out. She provided a variety of images and did a great job of displaying and explaining them! She spoke very clearly and provided tons of valuable information.

  • What could be done better in this presentation?

This presentation was great but I would have loved to see some direct correlations to our chapters readings.

  • Does the presentation effectively include information from Chapter 4 of Criticizing Photographs?

The presentation does not include specific information from chapter 4, but a lot of the concepts could be applied to the photos she included very easily! Like the first image could be described as an explanatory photo because it shows, in a unique way, how the baseball players move!

  • What do you see in the photographer’s work?

I see tons of unique concepts that I have not seen, as well as photos that aren't unique as a whole, but have some sort of factor making it different. An example could be the desert photo, adding those two balls make the photo unique and original, its not just a photo of the desert because it has the artists creativity embedded in it!

  • How does this photographer’s work make you feel?

The photographer has varying images, but the overall feeling I get is wanting to see more, I like his twist on his photographs and it leaves me wondering what he will do next.

  • How does learning about this photographer affect your perception of photography?

I loved being able to learn about another photographer so closely and he definitely contributed to expanding my perception of photography. As a photographer, your art can be anything you want, and he shows this by his working not always being similar to the other.

  • How will learning about this photographer influence your work in the future?

This photographer showed me that if I want to photograph it, do it! His art spans over a variety of categories and I like seeing that he has tried different things through his art, which I also intend to do in the future!

Hi Jessica!

I really enjoyed your presentation on Mary Ellen Mark! You did an excellent job capturing the depth and emotion behind her photographs. I was particularly struck by the way you highlighted her choice to focus on marginalized subjects—showing a side of society often overlooked. The black and white tone really amplifies the impact and adds an extra layers of somberness, adding a timeless quality to her images. I’d be interested to know if there were any specific challenges or criticisms she faced throughout her career, given her focus on such poignant topics. I would also be interested if there were any aspects of any of the photos you would like to see in a different perspective (angle, lighting, etc). Great work!

Hi Jessica,

I loved your presentation and learning more about artist Mary Ellen Mark. The way you described her photography was admirable, and I think you chose good photographs of hers, for this project. I loved seeing and learning that her photographs have depth behind them (for example the one of the little boy and his mom, holding the banner in support of Vietnam). There is a lot of power behind the photos, and them being in black and white adds to the tone in my opinion. Great job!

This was a great and very concise presentation. I enjoyed all of the photos that you used in this presenation, particularly because they were a bit risky and not photos that people normally want to see. It was interesting to see how Mary Ellen Mark pushed against societal norms to shine light on those who aren't as priviledged as others. I think the black and white photos gave her images more character and meaning. I would love to know what kinds of backlash, if any, she received from her work.
